Kyrenia

Creator:

Pritchard, T., H.

Tarih:

ca. 1925

Inscriptions:

Inscribed on backing board separated from the original Pritchard painting: To my dear and esteemed colleague Molly Tomlinson as a token of regard on the occasion of her marriage with best wishes from T.H. Pritchard. The painting is of the harbour of Cyrenia in even tide. (a sweet quiet, little haven in Cyprus).

Description:

An almost monochrome watercolour with touches of gauche portrays the small harbour of Kyrenia. Painted from a western position, the buildings seem to be sinking far away into the horizon as if the town fades into time. The sepia colouring creates an atmosphere of heat, stillness and dryness, accentuated by the fact that the artist refuses to grant even the sea its natural blue. The minaret invites the viewer into a city almost hidden by walls and steers his imagination into the quest of a dearly held secret. The guache reflection of buildings in the sea and the slight linear indications of water bring the picture to life and the town out of its enchantment.
