Printed in lower centre recto: Eine Schlangenbändigerin auf Cypern
Description:
This print bears the inscription ‘a snake charmer in Cyprus’. Most probably, it depicts a Gypsy girl. She appears lascivious and heavily ornamented. She holds a snake in her left hand while she beats the drum with her right. The excess ornamentation adds an orientalist aspect to the picture. The headdress, the viper and her Mediterranean looks allude to the image of Cleopatra. Especially the snake, conveys the mystique and the exoticism of the East, and reminds one that Cyprus was called the snake island.
