Description:

Boos was an American artist from California of Dutch origins known for his ink drawings of western scenes and cowboys. He must have visited Cyprus around the middle of the twentieth century and inspired by the quaint looking people, he made a series of drawings of them. Starting from top left, a pair of ox pull a primitive wooden cart, driven by a capped peasant, in an almost archaic fashion. A hard labouring woman bent in two is collecting wheat, reminding the viewer of the tolls of rural life. The next drawing is of a peasant riding his donkey in a rather arrogant style with his pipe hanging from his lips and the donkey carrying, apart from the peasant, two huge wicker baskets. The poor animal seems to be carrying a load over-sizing itself. A priest is dressed in an old fashioned striped robe, of the kind used mostly during the Ottoman period. The last vignette is of a young Cypriot beauty, wearing a headscarf and a serious, almost sad expression, found in faces of villagers who resign to the hardships of life.
