Description:

Phocion Demetriades, known also as Phocos, was one of the most celebrated cartoonists in Greece. He was born in Istanbul, worked at the National Bank of Greece and he was a schoolbook illustrator. He was primarily a political cartoonist known for associating Greek Prime Minister Tsatsos with a hen (to poulli tou, a pun on the word ‘bird’ to mean ‘cock’).The postcard depicts Cyprus in the form of a peasant woman questioning American politician Dulles on the applicability of liberal ideals to the Cyprus dispute. The statue of Liberty and UN headquarters appear in the rear to highlight the contradiction between lofty American ideals on one hand and the realities of American foreign policy on Cyprus on the other as expressed in the United Nations.
