The Queen's New Clothes:

A unique portrait of Caterina Cornaro kept at CVAR, painted in Venice (School of Titian) during the XVI century, depicts a young lady dressed with oriental style clothes. Why does the Venetian artist choose to dress the Queen of Cyprus with oriental garments? Did Caterina Cornaro ever wear clothes of an Eastern type? How did other women of the island dress during the XVI century? How did Titian’s prototype influence the development of the portrait of ‘the woman of the East’? We will address these and other questions regarding fashion and XVI century Venice and Cyprus, through the lens of one of the most intriguing paintings from the CVAR collection.

Dr Iosif Hadjikyriakos is the Director of the Fivos Stavrides Foundation - Larnaca Archives. After his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, he studied Art History at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. In 2017 he obtained his PhD at the school of Social Anthropology, at the University of Ioannina on the topic of Venetian fabrics in the Ottoman Empire. Dr Iosif Hadjikyriakos maintains collaborations with higher education institutions and organisations in Cyprus and abroad in relation to research programmes. As a visiting lecturer and as a special scientist, he teaches both in Cyprus and abroad. His research interests include material culture and the art forms developed in the Eastern Mediterranean in relation to Europe. He has published scientific articles in volumes and journals.
