Rupert Gunnis, spending his first festive season in the island, noted what impressed him during the feast of the Three Hierarchs of the Orthodox Church:

Lady Storrs and I to the special service in the Greek cathedral in honour of St Basil, St Gregory and St Chrysostom. We were given special thrones on a dias next to the Archbishop. It was a long but interesting service. The Archbishop and clergy all in full robes. In the middle of the service they sang “God save the King” an amazing thing and I am sure the first time it had ever been done. One had to stand nearly all the time. The Church very full. To tea with Madame Vergopoulos, the widow of the cigarette manufacturer. She has a good collection of antiques, made by her late husband, but wouldn’t part with any though I tried to persuade her to lend some to the museum.
