Lieut-Colonel Benjamin Donisthorpe Donne had difficulties with his men in Limassol:

Owing to a row in the Greek quarter of the town, 6 men deserted on 16th but they were all brought back at different periods and sent to prison. I conducted my office work in Gilmore’s office. The men also, principally the Greeks, took to malingering to get off the works  but having made a good example of one man, it stopped the rest.
