Sten Boye Poulsen Collection

The Sten Boye Poulsen collection contains over 400 black and white photographs and over 150 colour slides which the photographer took using his 2 cameras, an Agfa and a Kodak. The photographs were taken between 14 November 1964 and 5 May 1965, the period during which the photographer was stationed in Cyprus as a member of the United Nations Danish Contingent (UNFICYP – DanCon). The collection’s main subject is the day to day living of the Danish soldiers around the Ledra Palace Hotel and the old city of Nicosia but also includes scenes from trips taken to other areas of Cyprus such as Famagusta. The collection also includes scenes from 1993 when on a honeymoon trip, the photographer re-visited the places he had seen in 1964-1965.

Sten Boye Poulsen was born in Odense Denmark, on 20 March 1944. Before working as a teacher for forty years (1969 – 2009), he had joined the Danish army in July 1963 and was sent to Cyprus as a member of the United Nations Danish Contingent in 1964. He arrived in Cyprus early in the morning of 14 November 1964 and remained on the island until 5 May 1965. In 2021, Sten Boye Poulsen donated part of his collection to the CVAR, to be exhibited and studied. The images that comprise the online collection were digital images reproduced by the photographer from the original black and white negatives and colour slides. The titles were taken from inscriptions to the photographs when available that justify inconsistencies to the depicted image. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were generated by the cataloguer describing the depicted subject. CVAR holds digital reproductions of the originals and shares copyrights with Sten Boye Poulsen.
