In 1923, Charles F. Jackson, an American mining engineer from Cleveland, Ohio, along with his wife, Ruby L. and their two children, Betty and Jack, moved to Cyprus at the bequest of the Cyprus Mines Corporation to work in the copper mines near Skouriotissa. They would live in the monastery compound of Skouriotissa for two years. During their stay they produced many letters and photographs, capturing their impressions of the island and providing important insight into the conditions of the people who worked in the mines.
The collection displayed here includes 368 black and white photographs of the family, their journey to and from Cyprus, their home in Skouriotissa, the local people, as well as images of the mines and the staff at work.
The images that comprise the online collection were reproduced from the originals and donated to the CVAR by William Johnson Everett, the son of Betty Jackson. The titles were taken from inscriptions when available. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were based on information provided by William Johnson Everett.
CVAR holds digital reproduction of the originals and shares copyrights with the owner
