The American Lorenzo Warriner Pease, after having spent almost five years on the island, explains what he was told about the cotton-flax people and the dragoman:

The Christian name of the Aga is Andreas Solomonides and his Turkish name is Mehmet Hourous. Aga is the Turkish word for Lord. The Aga says that Hadji Georgaki, the dragoman, was a very great zealot of his faith and was greatly opposed to the Turks. He even opposed whenever he had an opportunity and thus subjected himself to their hatred and finally caused them to rebel for the purpose of relieving themselves of him. They went to Constantinople and procured an army to be sent to bring them to subjugation.
