The American Missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease never failed to note changes in the customs of the island, including the dress code:
Went to the Skala, paid the teacher and set out to return before 12 o’clock. The Governor had returned dressed in Frank clothes as he now holds a new office from the Sultan, which renders it necessary. Saw crows on the backs of goats and thought they seemed to pick from them. They were apparently friendly.
