Lorenzo Warriner Pease, an American missionary, reflected on the influence of the Church in Cyprus:

The Archbishop had obtained permission from the government (by a present of course) to bring the Madonna de Cico down from her peak of the mountains to Nicosia for the purpose of giving the people the chance to pray to her in the present distress.

She was brought down in the summer of 1835 and remained till October. Pierides says that the priests gained at least 400.000p; some say even 500.000 and 600.000p. It is said that St. Luke painted the picture.
