American Consul General Taylor Belcher sent a telegram to the Secretary of State from Nicosia:

First legal processions and demonstrations held in Cyprus in past three years passed off without incidents yesterday. Governor’s relaxation law against processions enable Greek Cypriots celebrate Greek Independence Day in traditional style. Nicosia mass of Greek flags. Nationalist parade took over hour pass in review by Greek Consulate. Interesting note: Demonstrations Nicosia divided into left and right wing processions-with provisions made insuring two did not meet. Belcher.
