The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease commented upon his arrival to Omodos:

9.30 we arrived at Omodos, a very beautiful village, the birthplace of Archbishop and his archdeacon. It is so situated as to command a fine view of the gorge between the hills towards the sea. The land here is all white, and covered with vines. It is true that there are many of the mountains yet wild and covered chiefly with pine, but wherever they have begun to cultivate, it is chiefly vine. So far as I have observed the best wine seems to be made on the lower hills, which are chiefly calcareous limestone, and therefore I infer that the wine is indebted either to the climate or the soil or both for this quality. But I am no judge.
