The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease comments on the latest firman from the Sultan:
Yesterday, Mr Pierides and other Greeks put on the tarboosh, the emblem of subjection to the Porte. The firman commanded that all who had been born under the Sultan, whether they enjoyed European protection by naturalisation or not should immediately adopt this cap and be enrolled as persons liable to pay taxes like others, as this right has been acknowledged by treaties, there was no remedy – obedience was necessary. It has been rather a mortifying step, but they have complied with it as cheerfully as possible.
