From the diary of Sir Garnet Wolseley

From the diary of Sir Garnet Wolseley:

Started from camp at 8.00am with Graves, Gifford and Herbert and picked up Biddulph at the Kyrenia Gate, when we all proceeded slowly to Kythrea about 8 miles from Nicosia, or two and a half hours from thence, for everything here, in the way of distance is counted in hours, that is, the time men take I travelling on mules which go about three or three and a half miles an hour according to the level of the road.
