The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease commented on the monks of Kykko:

The patriarch has commended the head of the convent of Cico to require all monks in future to have some learning. How much attention will be paid to these two orders is doubtful. One thing is however certain, that it indicates awakefulness in the Greek Church which augurs good, and we may hope that the people will soon demand a change for the better. In Greece, Charalambos has heard that they begin to divide the services into two parts and have the second at 9 o’ clock or thereabouts.
