Swedish archaeologist Alfred Westholm wrote about the social life of the Swedes in Cyprus:

Last week we were invited to afternoon tea by a prominent Greek family here in town, whose wife is born Norwegian. Sjöqvist and I presented ourselves as worthy representatives of the expedition. There were loads of people, remarkably enough almost only Englishmen. Naturally, it did not end without a little turn, a kavajskutt (ask Brita what that is!). On Saturday the Gjerstads are giving a dinner at their hotel, naturally followed by dancing. This is in short what has happened, a few simpler dinner invitations from the Greeks, who like us very much. In spite of the hateful English, the Greeks have not forgotten their old love for foreigners, which they now make clear to us in every imaginable way.
