Women in Mesaoria

Creator:

Guney, Ismet Vehit, 1932-2009

Date:

ca. 1950

Description:

Ismet Vehit Guney is a Cypriot cartoonist, teacher and painter who won the prize for the design of the Cypriot flag. The oil painting portrays two Turkish Cypriot women working in the fields in Mesaoria. Judging from the red colour of the soil, the field depicted is close to Famagusta. The white headscarf and the way it is worn are typical of Turkish Cypriot women’s attire. The picture enjoys the strong colours of the Cypriot harvest time. Although it is summer, the women are totally covered to protect themselves from the scorching sun.
