Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Governor Ronald Storrs, was very interested in icons:

In the afternoon I took Mrs Monekton and Mrs Helen Percy round the town. I myself examined more carefully the church of Ayios Cassianos. I am much interested in a large icon in the centre of which is the Virgin and Child and round the sides little pictures depicting medieval scenes, rather like the Bayeux tapestry in execution, pictures of knights in medieval armour, priests and acolytes. I am certain it is not Greek, was it once in the Sophia? One of the knights carries a Germanic shield. I must find out about it quite one of the best things I have seen here.
