The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease on changes in education and the church in Cyprus as expressed by someone who must have been influenced by the followers of Corais in Greece and the movement of enlightenment:

A young Lefcariti called on me, who has lived in Greece sometime. He thinks that the present order of things in the great Greek Church cannot exist long, but that the few Greeks will soon demand a reform. [He talked of the marvellous effects of philosophy in improving the conditions of his people and said that many young Greeks are going to Paris to study.] I directed his attention to the bible as the basis of true national peace and prosperity.
