During a visit to Government House, British officer Fred Beul was shaken up:

Rode down to Government House and called on Lady Sendall who seemed very nice, afterwards called on the Bennetts where we stayed sometime. At about 11.30pm I was sitting in the ante room and an earthquake took place which lasted for over 1 minute. It was the first I ever felt.
