Lieutenant Donnisthorpe Donne comments on the Cypriot hospitality when he arrives at Myrtu village:

Two hours’ ride over a rugged uncultivated succession of rocky hills and valleys zig-zagging up and down over a surface of white marl overgrown with stunted myrtle bushes, we at length arrived at Myrtu village, close to Panteleimon Monastery. The Bishop was here at the time and everything about the place betokened an unusual advance in civilisation one is hardly accustomed to find outside the big towns. In the little house I put up in at Myrtu village everything was as clean and comfortable as one could wish for a week’s stay, and my kind hosts and their grown up daughters were as kind as they could be, refusing to let me pay anything for my board when I left next morning.
