From the diaries of Edith Belcher, wife of USA consul:

Having stayed out of town all week, I discovered that yesterday Foot walked down Ledra Street with only two bodyguards and no armoured tanks such as Harding utilised on his last week here when he toured the city. But of course, Foot up to now, hasn’t had a bomb flung at him and Harding had. Toby said we still couldn’t go Christmas shopping! Went to a school exhibit at a quarter part three opened by Jane Sinclair. I bought a charming painting made by an Armenian child, ten years old. The family wanted it so we traded with one they had bought. Took the children home and dashed off for a coffee with Mrs Smainis at Ledra Hotel. She is very sweet and very optimistic regarding the problem here.
