The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease commented:
The monastery of Kykkos is the most famous in Cyprus. It has about 250 (according to the accounts of the monks), who are scattered over the island, and even in different parts of the world. The monastery has many metochia, which are cared for by the monks, while other carry a picture of the virgin to be worshipped by good Christians, which brings them in no small gain. Whether there be really 250 is doubtful in my mind, though I have not received satisfaction from my inquiries.
