Sir Garnet Wolseley reached Peristerona

Sir Garnet Wolseley reached Peristerona:

The road entirely unmade, travelled over for over 2000 years, is very good and level and quite practicable throughout for wheeled conveyance. It crosses the dry beds of some streams, small ones and of a large sized river at Peristerona, which river, rising in the mountains between Mt macheras and Adelphi, flows into the sea near Morphou. It was originally crossed there, at Peristerona by a well-built bridge of five arches, now in a ruinous condition, and the river has been allowed to enlarge itself into about ten times its width when the ancient bridge spanned it. The town is situated on the left or west bank and immediately on the river, at the spot where the road used to pass over the bridge, is a well- built church of considerable size and, I should say, of considerable antiquity (1549). The Goths of the present age have added to it a bell tower out of all keeping with its style of architecture.
