The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease visited Kutup Osman Tekye:

The Turkish monastery near the gate was built by the late Governor of Cyprus Said Mehmet Aga. It seems that one of the former Pashas, more than 100 years ago was banished from Constantinople to Famagusta where he died, and was buried out of the walls. A few years since, a relative of his became Vesir and received permission to erect buildings over the tomb, accordingly the order was given and sent there together with the money, but that was consumed and the government compelled the people to erect the building. There is one monk who however goes into the city at night. He teaches a few boys in the daytime.
